Hibiscus granitas are a beautiful bright pink that adds to the colorful Cinco de Mayo decorations all around you.

If the allure of ice cream is too hard to deny, you can always add that native Mexican treat, chocolate sauce. Spice it up with a good kick of chipotle or cinnamon. The warmth you feel in your mouth from the spicy chocolate contrasts with the coolness of the ice cream. Memorable parties are made from such flavorful unions.

Maybe your preferences run to the classic; cake is down to earth and easy to make. The classic Tres Leches is impressive to serve. The richness of the cake comes from the three different types of milk. Served chilled, it truly is a little slice of heaven. For real simplicity, bake chocolate cupcakes with added chipotle and cinnamon. One bite is all it takes to convert you to this amazing confection.

To add authentic Mexican sparkle to your menu, make capirotada, which is a Mexican bread pudding studded with raisins, pecans and two kinds of cheese. Top it off with nutmeg, cinnamon and whipped cream for a dessert your guests will rave about for months.

Other authentic Mexican desserts to consider include empanadas filled with fruit and cream, sweet tamales filled with almonds and fruit, and churros, which can be served with a hot cup of Mexican chocolate to drink. We know so little of the delicious Mexican desserts here in the United States… why not use your Cinco de Mayo party to explore some of these delectable delights?

As you decide what Cinco de Mayo food to serve, go ahead and use as many hot, spicy foods as you wish. He decreed afterward that all establishments serving wine must also serve food to prevent drunkenness.

Appetizers have many names in different countries. The UK calls them starters. France calls them canaps, amuse-bouche, or hors d’oeuvres. In Sweden, appetizers make up the smorgasbord. You may find appetizers made of salmon, herring or eel as well as butter, cheese and bread. The tradition in Sweden is to eat cold foods, and then alternate with hot foods until the meal is done.

In Greece and the Middle East, appetizers are known as “meze.” They like deep fried foods served with creamy dips that are based on yogurt.
